Originally from Somalia, Anab arrived in Engalnd in 1990 as a student.  As the war broke out in Somalia, Anab applied for refugee status, and also managed to help bring her family over to England. Though adjustment was initially hard– she had to get used to a new languaguge, a new climate, and different people– she found it overall easy to adapt. Now, she describes her life as “excellent” – her family are UK citizens, and have priviliges one would rarely find in Somalia; she appreciates living in UK because of the NHS, education for children, lack of religioius repression, and the good safety.

With regards to WRC, the consortium assisted her in creating her own organization, a community center that keeps children off the streets and provides a safe and constructive environment for children during their free time. In the future, she hopes that WRC will get more places for people to meet and receive more funding, a problem many common to many similar community organizations. Her general goals are to protect kids from gangs, drugs, and criminal activity, as well as trying to establish an environment where there is less repression for women, and create a place where people can talk, meet, and generally be happy.
