Alawia Mohammed
Alawia Mohammed is orginally from Sudan. One morning she came to work, and many employees were immediately dismissed from their job. Because of her sudden unemployment, and the political issues in her country, she had no choice but to leave her family behind. She came to the United Kingdom in 1989, seeking asylum.
Initially, it was difficult to adjust. She had to leave Sudan without bringing any of her belongings. Although there was a rough start, she found the UK government handled her situation better than she expected. Her true adjustment and comfort began when she found the Westminster Refugee Consortium.
The Consortium helped her with starting and funding her supplementary school, which teaches English and holds classes on Saturdays. She also occasionally helps out with the homeless.
She now lives with her grandchildren in Chelsea. Although she is quite adjusted, she still misses her home country. Nevertheless, the Consortorium has helped her gain the feeling of a second home here, in the UK.
